We the Peacemakers: How Montessori Makes Peace

About

About the Project

We the Peacemakers is a collection of digital videos about how Montessori schools educate for peace. The mission of We the Peacemakers is to inspire and empower educators, students and parents to examine their roles as active people for peace.

The project began is 2010 when Montessori educator Carolyn Barschow planned a trip to visit schools across the United States. Carolyn wanted to investigate how schools define peace and what practices made up a “peace curriculum.”

The films and blog on the We the Peacemakers website document her travels to 7 Montessori schools from February to May 2010. She is working to make the website a place for other schools, educators and students to share how they practice peace.

About the Videos

Carolyn proved that ANYONE can make videos! Carolyn never recorded or edited video prior to this project. Her skills in video recording and editing were developed through a one-day workshop offered by the Philadelphia, PA, public television station MiNDTV.

Carolyn recorded video on used Canon Eulra 90 miniDV recorder. Audio was captured using a combination of basic external shotgun mic and lavalier mic. A basic tripod with a panning feature was used during much of the recording. Editing software was iMovie ’09 on a MacBookPro.

Videos are hosted on a basic account at Vimeo.
